Jawahn Thompson asked:

Air travel is clearly the safest means of travel. More people travel safely on these big birds than in cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles and trains. That should tell the whole truth, but it doesn’t. Where else in your life are you seated within spitting distance of 180 other people who may, or may not, be ill?

You can probably concede that there’s nothing you could do in the case of engine failure or some sort of hostile takeover of an airplane in flight. That’s okay because these incidents are so very, very rare. What you can do is help prevent getting sick or infecting others by following these simple steps and tips.

Understanding the Air Up There

You shouldn’t be surprised that the air at 35,000 feet is much different than on the ground, even if you live in the Mile High City at 5000+ feet above sea level. To start with, you will likely feel thirstier than you would on the ground. That’s because the filtration of the air, in an attempt to keep it clean, removes all particles, including moisture from the air in the cabin.

The pressure, even in a pressurized cabin, will feel heavier to some than to others. It is important to yawn often or plug your nose and mouth and GENTLY blow out. This will help “pop” your ears, allowing them to adjust to the pressure in the plane.

To Fly or Not to Fly

Those suffering with a cold, flu or other airborne virus or bacteria are urged not to fly if at all possible. Not only are you putting 180 of your fellow passengers at risk, you are likely to feel worse during the flight than at home, resting. If you absolutely must fly sick, consider wearing a hospital mask to keep your germs to yourself. For comfort, take a decongestant soon before boarding and rub the inside of your nose with petroleum jelly to avoid the lining of your nose from drying out in the dehydrated air. Also, keep your medicines with you in your travel bag do not check them if at all possible.

If you’ve been under the knife recently and still have stitches or sutures that have not healed completely, flying could set back your recovery considerably. The pressure may cause unnecessary stress on your wounds and cause them to reopen. Always contact your doctor before flying post-operatively.

Should you foresee the possibility of being under the weather or post-operative before making your flight reservations, consider purchasing travel insurance. It is almost always more expensive to buy new tickets or change your old ones if you do not have travel insurance in place.

Cocktails, Anyone?

For some, the experience of flying includes a cocktail or two. Understand that your blood oxygen level decreases in flight, so the concentration of one glass worth of wine is heavier than on the ground. While a gin and tonic may not make you loopy at home, it will likely have the effect of one and a half or even two cocktails in the air.

Another effect of alcohol is its natural tendency to act as a diuretic while on the ground or in the air. Diuretics will increase blood flow through the kidney causing more water to filter out. Your urine production goes up, your water volume goes down. Avoid alcohol and caffeine to keep your kidney in check.

Exercise? In These Small Seats?

Don’t start your Tae Bo workout or work on your yoga inversions in your 2 cubic feet of personal space, but do practice some simple stretches and exercises to keep yourself from feeling run down.

Start with neck and shoulder stretches. Practice putting your chin to your chest, then looking up to those reading lights. Tip your head from side to side and do a few slow, controlled circles in both directions. Next, shrug your shoulders a few times the press your chest out while pushing your shoulder blades together.

Move onto your arms by bringing your elbows to shoulder level with your fist pointing straight up at a 90 degree angle from your elbow. Flex your bicep slowly until the muscle begins to hurt a little. Repeat with the other side.

For forearms, pack along a tennis ball and squeeze with your hand facing down and your forearm out in front of you. Once you’re done with your forearms, put the tennis ball between your knees and SQUEEZE those inner thighs for 5 seconds, then release. Repeat.

Fight the urge to let your abdominals turn to flubber in the plane and work them, as well. Don’t do sit-ups in the aisle, instead try this breathing suction motion. Exhale all the air in your lungs. Before inhaling, suck your stomach in as high into your ribcage as you can. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds, then inhale and relax. Repeat as many times as you can. Note: don’t do this right after eating.

When you get up to take a walk to the front or the back of the plane, stop for a minute or two and do calf raises. Stand flat-footed then raise up to your toes. Repeat until your calves are on fire or the seat belt sign illuminates and the Captain asks you back to your seat.

Shifting Weight

Not in the bulkhead compartment, though those suitcases have been known to shift during flight, but your weight. Avoid sugary or heavy meals or snacks on your journey. Bring along an apple, banana, a cheese stick or a sandwich wrap to munch on. Choose a diet soda, club soda or plain old sky-juice (water, that is) instead of a calorie-laden cola.

James Brown asked:

Whether it is by foot, land, sea or air, people have been traveling since ancient times. Even the first people, according to history, had vast experience on travel in pursuit for food, shelter and other necessities. As the world of travel evolves, so does the means of transportation and reasons why people travel. Aside from the fascination of seeing new places, setting foot on a strange land can give you the benefits for improved well-being Here are a few tips for an experience you will truly cherish.

What are the benefits of traveling?

Traveling feeds curiosity. It adds to your knowledge the lifestyle and culture of a specific place even their language. It increases your awareness on issues that beset a population. It answers your questions about what’s happening in the other side of the world.

Traveling fascinates you. Seeing new places, discovering new cultures and meeting new people while you have the resources and energy to do so, explore as many places as you can.

Traveling is what you deserve. If you feel you need a getaway or an escapade, be kind to yourself. Go to somewhere relaxing or give yourself a treat for a job well done.

Traveling nurtures relationships. For families who travel, this is a quality time for them to bond with each other. To a couple, it is their means of spending time for each other while the kids are home or while work is put on hold.

Traveling leaves good memories. Mostly, if not all, traveling gives one of the best memories you could ever have. Discovering new places, cultures, lifestyles and people are great memories that are worth the while.

Ensuring that you get the best experience to travel, you need to do a little job too but don’t fret, it’s easy and it makes you love to do it. Anyway, this is something you got to give yourself.

Plan

Choose a place to go. Get a lot of information for the place, its forecasted weather, the modes of transportation, the hotels, etc. Keeping yourself informed of these will make decision making easier and this is also a way to prepare once you’re already there.

Pack

Bring only what you need during your travel. If you want to add extra, just make sure you don’t bring your entire house. If you’re planning to shop then just pack minimal for clothing. Check the website on what cannot be brought in inside the port for example and never forget travel documents like passports, valid identification cards and credit cards if you don’t plan to bring cash.

Prepare

Since you’re leaving the house, make sure it is secure and you still have a house when you come back. Ask you neighbors to keep an eye on it once in a while perhaps.

It is imperative to check your health condition too prior to traveling. Pay a visit to your physician because there are certain illnesses that you may get. Get the best advice from your physician on how you may maintain your health.

One last note though, don’t forget to enjoy and have fun!

Antonio Cresce asked:

Anyone who is interested in a luxury holiday to Italy will inevitably be drawn to the best spas and thermal baths the country has to offer. Since Roman times, spas have been one of the most popular forms of relaxation and socialising in Italy, and today its thermal baths and spas have become so popular that many holiday goers make them the centrepiece of their trip.

The best destinations for spa holidays in Italy are on the coast or the small islands that surround the mainland, and Sicily has some of the best thermal spa hotels in the region. Most of the top luxury hotels in Sicily have some kind of spa facility, and there are many that specialize in thermal treatments. Sicily and the Aeolian islands have numerous active and dormant volcanoes, and many spas take their spa water from natural hot springs. This volcanic spring water has a particularly high salt and mineral content, giving many health benefits to those who bathe in it.

Just as important as the quality of a luxury spa hotel in Sicily is its location. Some people want peace, quiet and natural beauty after a spa session, others want vibrant city life and an authentic taste of Sicilian culture as part of their holiday. Here are five of the best spa towns in Sicily, from bustling cities and towns to secluded island retreats.

Catania

Located on the east coast of Sicily, Catania is the island’s second largest city after Palermo. The source of Catania’s hot springs isn’t hard to locate – the city sits at the foot of the largest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna.

The proximity of the volcano has made the surrounding land extremely fertile, and the spring water is of excellent quality. Though earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have damaged the city at several points in its history, many of the ancient buildings remain intact. The city is also famed for its popular music scene, and so offers both handsome architecture and a vibrant nightlife. For people who want the bustle of an exciting city as part of their spa holiday in Sicily, Catania is an outstanding choice.

Vulcano

If you want a little more seclusion while on your luxury holiday in Sicily, some of the best places to go are on the Aeolian Islands, a small archipelago just off the north coast of Sicily. Each island has some superb spa resorts, but perhaps the best of them can be found on Vulcano.

As the name of the island suggests, several volcanoes are at the centre of the island, giving rise to the hot springs that are used by the spa hotels on Vulcano. The island is sparsely populated, leaving plenty of untouched natural beauty to enjoy between spa sessions. And for those who are looking for unusual health and beauty treatments, sulphur mud baths are a particular speciality offered by the spas of Vulcano.

Taormina

Taormina is small town on the east coast of Sicily, popular with tourists and famed for its superb beaches. The town itself is a great place to relax during spa holidays in Sicily, with picturesque architecture and a rich history. It’s an especially good place for culture vultures – Taormina features one of the most popular archaeological sites in Sicily, the ‘Greek Theatre’, a superbly preserved amphitheatre which is the venue for numerous live music and theatre events. For a luxury holiday in Sicily, Taormina is a great middle ground between a busy city like Catania and the more isolated Aeolian island resorts.

Mazara Del Vallo

Located in the southwest of Sicily, Mazara Del Vallo is a busy port town that is home to the largest fishing fleet in Italy. The area immediately around Mazara Del Vallo, where many of the best spa hotels are to be found, is rich with numerous olive groves and vineyards, providing a handsome backdrop to some of the best luxury resorts for holidays in Sicily. This part of the island is visited by fewer tourists than the north and east, which makes Mazara Del Vallo the ideal place to get away from the crowds for relaxing spa holidays in Sicily.

Termini Imerese

The very name of Termini Imerese is inseparable from its history as a spa town. Derived from the Latin “Thermae Himerenses” or “Hot springs of Himera”, the town has been a significant spa town since it was found over two and half thousand years ago. It has a history associated with the Hercules and the armies of Hannibal, and was once praised by Cicero as one of the finest towns in Sicily. Today, those on spa holidays in Sicily can still see the ancient Roman aqueducts and enjoy a superb view across the sea to nearby Palermo. Pretty architecture and good views aside, the town works hard to uphold its traditional role as a premier spa town. It has some of the best luxury hotels in Sicily, and most offer an extensive range of health and beauty treatments.

Mary Hanna asked:

You really want to take a cruise but you also really want to go to a spa for physical fitness and maybe a little pampering. In the world today you can do both. Years ago you were lucky to find a spa on a cruise ship. If there was one, it was in a really remote area of the ship. As for physical fitness there was very little equipment and most of it was tired. When people started to become more conscious of their looks and health the cruise lines revised their way of thinking. Cruise travel now can double as a spa vacation as well as learning a new physical fitness program.

The newer cruise ships have gone to great lengths to accommodate the cruise passenger who also wants to beautify and tone up. The cruise lines have installed state of the art equipment, added numerous exercise classes, and offer the newest beauty treatments available. Many of the cruise lines have relocated their fitness centers to the top decks of the ships with lots of windows so you can have a view while you are on the treadmill, bike, or lifting weights. Tucked up into the corner is a big TV so you can watch the news from back home. The cruise ships now have three distinct areas, one for fitness, one for spa treatments and one for the beauty salon.

As mentioned, the fitness centers on cruise ships are now a thing to behold. They all will definitely have treadmills, Stairmasters, free weights rowing machines and bikes. Some cruise lines even have complete Nautilus machines. Popular exercise machines, especially on sea days, may require you to sign up for a particular time of day and will limit the amount of time you can use the machine.

If you want to use your cruise travel as a vehicle to start an exercise regime there are physical trainers onboard. Their services, however, will cost you extra. The trainer will ask you lots of questions about your health and diet and then will come up with a personal regime for you. He or she will then book times through the week for you to work together.

All cruise lines offer exercise classes, yoga, aerobics, dance, water aerobics, even Pilates and kickboxing. Some of these may require a slight fee. To find out when these classes are held consult your daily bulletin for times and fees, if any.

Now, you’re thinking why would I start a physical fitness regime while on a cruise ship, especially since they serve all that food, 24 hours a day? Well along with the newer, shinier and better facilities the cruise lines have also instituted what they call spa cuisine. Everyday they will offer a “lighter side” menu if you are really serious about you new physical fitness regime.

Don’t assume that if the ship is older, it won’t have a decent fitness and spa area. Check with your cruise travel agent to find out what facilities are onboard the cruise ship you have chosen. For instance, the QE2 is an older ship but it has a beautifully outfitted spa with a large staff. Celebrity’s slight older Century has a Thalassotherapy pool for their passenger’s enjoyment and it has become quite popular among their cruisers.

When you board your cruise ship go to the spa area. Usually on the first day the staff will be explaining their treatments and occasionally demonstrate how it is done. Sometimes they will raffle off treatments, so go to the demonstration just for that reason. If you have definitely decided that you will be doing some treatments, book them on day one to get the best times. Any beauty salon appointments should be made then too, hair appointments for formal night go very quickly.

Many times the spa and beauty staff will discount their services on days when the ship is in port. If you are going to a few cruise destinations that you have previously visited, take advantage of these offers. You will find that you can pick your time of day to get these treatments done with little or no competition. If you are an early riser, choose an appointment in the morning and then get off the ship to enjoy that port. Or, conversely, disembark early to explore your new port, and then return to the ship in the early afternoon to take advantage of a discounted treatment.

When you go to your spa appointment, do not wear jewelry or fancy clothes. Most treatments are a bit messy and you don’t want to ruin any of your belongings. It is best just to wear a robe. When you get there an attendant will give you a towel and a private locker to put away your things. You may then be asked to wait in a room. Your technician will come out to take you to the room designated for that particular application. You will also fill out a form on your health and any surgeries that you have had. The room you are in will most likely have a shower. It will definitely have a sound system to play soothing music and there will be an array of exotic oils and creams.

The cruise ship spas have gotten quite creative. They now offer couples massages where you and your partner are in the same room with different massage therapists. Then there are four hand massages where two people work on you at the same time. Some of the cruise lines offer in suite massages and some even have massages on the deck.

By far the highest percentage of staff are women but there a few men. If you have a preference between male or female spa technicians, state it when you make your appointment. Some people are uncomfortable lying naked on a table with a therapist of the opposite sex. Check the cruise ships policy on tipping. Some cruise lines automatically tack on a 15% charge to your bill while on others you may have to pay in cash. To save embarrassment, check at the time you make your appointments.

There are three lines that allow you to make your spa appoints before boarding the ship. Princess, Windstar and Celebrity all offer this option. In some cases they even have packages that you can book in advance. Be careful here though, they may give you some very early morning appointments which means you have to go and change them on the very first day. This is not the best policy since they should be giving you prime appointments for booking ahead.

Beauty salons will offer a full array of services. You can have your nails done, your hair colored or hand and foot treatments aside from just a trim. Most of the beauty salons have Europeans staffs. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Places like Austria require their beauty students to go to the equivalent of our college.

See, it is possible to turn your cruise into a spa vacation or physical fitness week. Just follow what your trainer or your beauty technicians tell you and eat the spa cuisine. You’ve just achieved three goals, a little bit of pampering, a fitness regime, and a light and healthy diet. This may be a new way for you to view cruise travel.

Happy Cruising!

Jo asked:

Family vacations are an essential part of living today, and can create wonderful memories that you can cherish for a lifetime. There are a few simple steps that parents can take to make sure everyone is safe and happy while traveling. Going on vacation with children can be a test of patience and attentiveness for parents, which many may find daunting. However, the good news is that just by taking these few simple tips, it can make everything much less stressful and leave you to relax and enjoy your family vacation.

Tip 1 – Pack Right

Depending on their age, children should pack or help pack some of their own things. You may however suggest them what type of clothes (preferably comfortable and loose) they should be carrying. Very useful for everyone in the family are pants that become shorts when the bottom parts zips off. You may think that you need everything but if you are really crunched for space, don’t pack anything that you can buy at your destination. Do bring some hand wipes, tissues, books, hard candies, paper and gum, markers, and a surprise toy for each child in a carry on bag.

Tip 2 – Protect Your Family’s Health

Bring along any medications your family requires, make sure they are well labeled and in their original containers. If you are traveling out of the country, check with the public health authorities if you need to get additional vaccines. They will recommend you the necessary vaccines, depending on where you are traveling to and for what duration. Make sure to get Travel Insurance, no one expects an accident to happen, what if your family is at the beach enjoying your Caribbean vacation and your child cuts his foot open on a rock or you suddenly have an appendicitis attack?

Tip 3 – Arrive Early at the Airport

Plan your arrival at the airport in such a way that you have plenty of check-in time. This will avoid last minute delays and take away a lot of stress, especially with today tighter security checks. Also, arriving early will allow your family to ensure you have seats together, allow time to purchase any last minute items, and give your little ones time to adjust to new surroundings.

Tip 4 – Select Seating Carefully

First row in the economy class are best coach seats to fly with children, as you get a lot of leg room. This is essential as you may need to stretch or walk around with the children if they get cranky during the travel. If you are unable to book seats in the first row, place the children between two responsible adults, away from the aisle. Young children should not sit in an aisle seat. The carts used for meals service take up almost the whole aisle, and a little could get hurt. Sitting near the galley and lavatory can also be convenient, especially if you want a bottle warmed or will be making frequent trips to the bathroom.

Tip 5 – Keep Them Occupied

Wondering how to keep kids busy on the flight? First off, pacifiers, gum, and bottles will decrease air pressure on the children’s ears. To keep a child interested during a long flight, bring his favorite toys and some new toys to spark their interest. Older children will love to have books, hand held game players or MP3 players to keep them busy.

Vijay Guha asked:

With the health consciousness of hoi polloi rising by the day, commoners often stumble upon hitherto unheard fitness jargon. And the word – spa is in grave danger of becoming a cliché, now that almost all health talk is considered incomplete without an abundant scattering of it. Despite its frequency of use in day-to-day chatter, the word remains a mere eardrum acquaintance for many. Here’s a lowdown on spa basics.

The word is an acronym of the Latin phrase ‘sanus per aquam’ which means health through water. Today its meaning has evolved to include a host of services on its menu – right from wholesome physical well being or getting treated for an ailment, to mental peace or an overall body rejuvenation package. Head to a spa and bid adieu to all your worries of shaping up, toning down, relaxing, de-stressing, and getting rid of the extra flab.

The panache of a spa lays in the right blend of stress management and beauty treatment that it offers on menu. And while we do not strip stress management of its due importance, we all know the effect of a good physical therapy on the emotional well being of a person. For example a foot massage or a simple facial can energize and enliven your spirits equally well as it works on your skin.

Some of the most popular spa treatments are discussed here, which might prove to be of some help to first timers.

Body wrap

As the name suggests, a body warp is a procedure where the whole body is wrapped in paste. This paste could well be a mud pack or herbal oil wrap. Varied wraps are used to tone, moisturize, cleanse and treat skin. Mineral rich mud is one of the most popular wraps, and the mud from Dead Sea is particularly known for its healing effects.

Massage therapy

A massage relaxes your body, pressurizing muscles and particular points to increase the blood circulation and, in turn, metabolism. Ayurvedic massage therapies have lately caught on the fantasies of spa goers, but other massage therapies like Shiatsu, hydrotherapy and watsu are also quite popular. While shiatsu massage is an oriental technique based on acupressure, where fingertip pressure is used to stimulate energy flow and solve specific physical problems, hydrotherapy comprises of treatments that are tailored to individual needs, be it relaxation, muscle-healing, or losing weight. Watsu is an amalgamation of water and shiatsu massage therapies. LaStone therapy is a technique involving the use of alternating hot and cold stones to relax muscles and repair stressed bodies.

Cosmetic treatments

A spa is also home to purely cosmetic procedures such as deep conditioning hair treatment, or intensive facials, manicures and pedicures. These treatments target the proverbial skin deep beauty and are aimed at customers who have little time on hand for a quick makeover. One of the most popular cosmetic procedures is waxing treatment, a painless hair removal treatment.

Aromatherapy

This therapy is based on one of the strongest human instincts – sense of smell. In this, a visitor is treated to the odor of particular scents that can relax and revitalize. Usually used as a part of a massage or a facial, it effectively brings about mood changes.

Medical treatments
