At home, there are many things that you can do to enhance your Chicago diabetic foot care regimen. Make sure to examine your feet daily, especially after any type of trauma, no matter how minor it might be. Make sure to report any changes to your doctor, and apply a water-based moisturizer every day. Wearing wool or cotton socks can also help to improve circulation problems.

Around the home, eliminate any obstacles that you may trip over or bump your feet on, and be sure to keep your toenails trimmed with a safety nail clipping tool. You should also make sure to wear sturdy comfortable shoes, and your podiatrist can help you to obtain the proper fit and if necessary, a prescription for specially made shoes.

Regular exercise is also an excellent home care tool, since it improves bone and joint health, circulation, and will help to stabilize blood sugar levels. If you smoke tobacco in any form, quitting is one of the best ways to optimize your diabetic foot care regimen. This is because smoking has been show to actually accelerate blood vessel damage, in particular, to the small blood vessels leading to the feet.

With age comes the increased risk of problems to the feet and legs, since circulatory problems and nerve damage are more common in elderly persons, with or without the additional presence of or risk factors for diabetes. The longer that you have had diabetes, the likelier you are to develop one or more major factors for diabetic lower extremity conditions.

The seriousness of an infection, the quality of circulation in your legs, and your adherence to a diabetic treatment plan all determine your wellness outlook.

Symptoms of diabetes vary from type to type. Type 1 diabetes usually comes on suddenly as a result of an illness or injury. Type 2, diabetes may go undetected for years, and symptoms may be contributed to aging or obesity.

People with type 2 may feel constantly tired, experience unexplained weight loss, excessive thirst, excessive urination excessive eating, poor wound healing, infection, altered mental states, blurry vision, and other similar symptoms.

While there is no cure for diabetes, with proper treatment, diet, and exercise, serious complications of the disease can be minimized or avoided. You should seek medical care if you are experiencing any symptoms of diabetes, and if diagnosed, work to maintain healthier lifestyle choices.

If you are obese and have had trouble loosing weight in the past, ask your doctor about the proper weight modification program. Remember, your feet are your lifeline, and proper care and treatment of them is essential for a lifetime of good health.

Darrin Reservitz asked:

Lately, television has been inundated with commercials for foot detox pads. All those commercials may have you wondering just what you can gain out of getting a set of foot detox pads for yourself.

Let’s take a closer look at them:

Should I Be Using Foot Detox Pads?

Foot detox pads are a great way to regain your health when nothing else seems to be doing the trick. While you may be eating healthy and exercising, the problem could be something you can’t control that way, toxins in your system. These toxins have been building up in you body for some time. Detox foot pads are a way to remove them from your system and make your body healthier.

How Did Toxins Get in My Body?

It’s just a fact of life. We are in a toxic world. There are toxins all around us, and some of them are going to get into your system. It could be in the form of the chemicals from the processed foods you eat. Possibly you’re getting toxins from the chemicals used to treat the water you are drinking. If nothing else, you are almost definitely taking in toxins from the air you breathe, which is getting more polluted by the day.

How Can Foot Detox Pads Help Me?

Foot detox pads are patches filled with a natural solution that is meant to get to work detoxifying your body. Most people put them on while they sleep, and the natural solution works while you rest.

The reason foot detox pads work so well is that they are based on the Chinese art of acupuncture, where a large number of the body’s receptors are located in the soles of the feet. By putting these pads on the soles of the feet, you are getting an express route to all the portions of your body that may need a detox.

The toxins will actually be released through the pores on the bottoms of your feet and you will be able to see them on the pads when you remove them in the morning.

How Long Do I Have to Use Them?

Most people use detox foot patches for a week or two. You will know when you are done using them when the pads come off and are clear of residue.

A complete health plan is just as much about the things you put into your body as the things you take out of it. While eating healthy and exercising is important, removing toxins, with foot detox pads, will help you complete the healthy cycle.

Even for those of us who are cutting back on our expenses (and who isn’t?), a day at the spa is just an absolutely worthwhile investment. We all run ourselves around like crazy, stacking up abnormal levels of stress and pressure. A massage isn’t just some frivolous luxury anymore. People are starting to take note of the importance of relaxing and being pampered for once. It’s necessary for your health: physical, mental, emotional, maybe even financial, if you consider the reinvigorating effects a spa day can have on your mind. You’ll be refreshed and ready to go, with your mind sharpened and your body relaxed. You’ll attack your job or your job hunt with a new energy.

Think I’m glorifying a day at the spa? You haven’t tried it yet, have you? Even if you’re not going to the spa for a complete sense of renewal, you will at least have the options of so many different benefits, from younger looking skin to fresh manicures and pedicures. Many people don’t realize just how much spas offer these days. While some pamper junkies may just go for it all, not every treatment may be up your alley, and if you’re on a budget, you’ll want to pick and choose what sounds the most amazing to you personally. A massage isn’t for everyone, nor is a facial. But the same people who shy away from that full body massage might realize they can never again live without the facial. You never know what your spa personality is until you try! But the surprisingly long list of spa treatments can be overwhelming. How do you know what to choose? How do you know what will be just perfect for you, what will relax you and get the best results, and what will be the best use of your money? Research, research, research people. It sounds boring but it’s worth it. If you just take the time to read some of the different treatments online ahead of time, then you’ll walk into your spa just as calm as one should be at a spa – that’s the whole point, right? You’ll know exactly what you want, and chances are, you’ll be happy with it. And, there’s no chance you’ll get talked into spending your money on some treatment you don’t want. So, what are some treatment options you’ll be able to enjoy?

Massages

There was a time when a massage was a massage, and the biggest difference in type came down to what type of lotion or oil was used. But now there are tons of different massages to choose from, and they range from therapeutic and healing to just plain relaxing.

A Swedish massage is the basic massage, just good old fashioned relaxation and some working out of that muscle tension.

A deep tissue massage is a more intense Swedish massage. This is good for you if you’re experiencing muscle pain or tension, because this massage really works on those knots and problem areas. If you don’t have any real problem areas, though, the massage itself might be a little uncomfortable, with all the pressure used.

A sports massage is more commonly performed by a physical therapist or massage therapist, since it’s meant to target chronic pain or problem areas – appropriately named, it’s ideal for the kind of pain and stress put on the muscles by athletics. It uses techniques like trigger point therapy to relieve that tension and pain. Unless you’re an athlete or have severe pain, this probably isn’t for you.

A hot stone massage is a somewhat newer and very popular massage option. It consists, go figure, of massaging with hot, smooth stones. The masseuse will then leave stones in places like the length of your spine and the palms of your hands, to get energy flowing. The stones actually feel like smooth lotion being massaged on.

Reflexology focuses on the feet primarily, but also can involve the hands and ears, because these are believed to be centers of “reflex,” that when massaged can generate a healthy energy flow. This is the way to go if you need an amazing foot massage, especially if your job requires you to be on your feet all day.

Thai massage is a newer massage making its way to more and more spas. It actually incorporates yoga into the massage, with the therapist actually moving you into yoga positions in a calm, easy, relaxing way. This is a great massage for a yoga lover or a more active person.

Facials

A basic facial involves a cleansing of the skin, a steam, and then a massage. It’s simple and relaxing, and it’s the least expensive option – however it’s not an effective option for any skin problems like acne.

A special facial is like a basic facial for more sensitive skin, and is also great for dry skin, since it involves the application of hypoallergenic creams for moisturizing.

Acne facials pack results with relaxation, by applying enzyme exfoliation and warm vapor mist, performing pore extractions, electric disencrustation, and finishes – before the massage – with a calming mask.

A collagen facial prevents dark circles and wrinkles by adding a self healing mineral mask over a freeze-dry collagen sheet to the basic facial, and then applying certain nutrients to the skin to ensure the absorption of the collagen.

The bio-lift facial adds a bio-mask of nutrients to the facial, to tighten skin and leave it younger looking and freshened.

The alpha hydroxy facial uses these acids from fruit and flowers for their amazing anti-aging results. These acids are applied in the form of creams to take years and sun damage away from the skin.

Aromatherapy facials might be the most relaxing of all, since it utilizes the well known de-stressing effects of calming aromas – here applied in a nutrient-laden mask. This is a really great option for both skin rejuvenation and vegging out.

Salon Services

A spa also offers what you can get at your hair salon or nail salon – but better. Take a normal manicure or pedicure that leaves your nails looking great, and now add soothing, calming elements, plus treatments that totally rejuvenate your hands and feet. You can get a manicure and/or pedicure with paraffin wrap, a hot wax-like substance that hardens around the hands or feet and makes skin so smooth and soft. You can get deep exfoliation to get rid of all dead skin, you can get a treatment with deep conditioning soft cream, and you can even get a mani or pedi with aromatherapy.

As long as you’re there, you might as well take the opportunity to get your hair cut, colored, and/or blown out. They’ll do a mean scalp massage when they wash your hair. Plan ahead and go to the spa at a time you need your hair done, too, since a lot of spas offer package deals when you take them up on a few services at once. Massage plus mani/pedi plus blow out, anyone?

Finally, don’t forget the more technical treatments you can get that are more routine than relaxing. Different spas offer cosmetic work like Botox, teeth whitening, laser hair removal, and chemical peels, to name a few. If you go for a medical spa, you will find a pool of options for the most effective treatments possible.

Remember to look into your spa to find out what packages they offer and the varying treatments. A lot of spas also do corrective treatments like hair removal, and they also do special events and deals for wedding parties, moms-to-be, teens, and more. Again, with a little research, you can find a spa with everything you want and need for prices within your range.

Brenda Williams asked:

Many foot health problems would not be considered serious by the medical profession. Nevertheless they are painful and annoying. A sore foot or sore feet may not drive you to the doctor’s office but can put you in a bad frame of mind. And there are several of these annoyances one of which is a bunion. A bunion is a protruding bump on the foot at the base of the great toe. More women tend to have bunions than men probably due to the fact that women wear high heels.

To prevent bunions, always buy comfortable, well fitting shoes and be sure they have plenty of toe room. If you already have a bunion, most drug stores sell pads that, when applied to the bunion, will protect it from further abuse. Bunions that cause severe discomfort can be treated surgically.

Another painful foot problem is a callus. Calluses are thickened areas of skin that may occur on the ball of the foot or on top of a bunion. They usually develop as a result of wearing poorly fitted shoes. High heels often cause calluses as they exert pressure on the ball of the foot. Calluses can be treated at home by massaging them with an over the counter ointment and then rubbing off the dead skin with a pumice stone. If this is ineffective, a podiatrist can remove the callus chemically or with surgery. A corn is basically the same as a callus but just smaller. They also develop from wearing new or ill fitting shoes. Drug stores sell a cushioned patch with a hole that can be placed over the corn and protect it from further pressure while it heals. A wart is a lump on the skin that is caused by a virus. The wart that tends to develop on the foot is a common wart or a plantar wart. Several of these can appear on the foot and can make walking very uncomfortable. There are many home remedies for warts but perhaps the most effective remedies are over the counter preparations available in any pharmacy.

If warts do not respond to home treatment, physicians can prescribe stronger treatments. But if this fails, a podiatrist can remove the warts from the foot by three ways. They can be burned off with electricity, frozen with liquid nitrogen or scraped off. Another irritating condition is athlete’s foot. This is a fungus that grows on the skin between and under the toes. It is very common and it is contagious. It usually develops as a result of using public showers in gyms.

Athlete’s foot can be treated by over the counter anti fungal powders and creams. It is important to keep feet dry at all times. So one should dry the feet thoroughly and carefully following a bath or shower. It is also important to wear absorbent socks and change socks daily. Cotton socks are preferable to synthetic fibers Wear shoes such as sandals that permit air to circulate around the feet. However, if all of these measures prove ineffective then a doctor’s help will be needed.

Fred Salomon asked:

Acute ball-of-foot pain symptoms can indicate the presence of Metatarsalgia, a medical condition which involves inflammation to the nerves attached to the metatarsal bones. Metatarsalgia is a common occurrence among runners, basketball players, tennis players, and other athletes involved in high-impact sports. It is also frequent among women who wear high-heel shoes for long periods at a time.

Common Symptoms of Metatarsalgia

People afflicted by metatarsalgia experiences sharp pain in the area of the sole directly behind the toes, more commonly known as the balls of our feet. The footache can be acute, burning, or dull, and is most often felt near the big toe, though it can also occur under the middle toes. These are the most frequent symptoms related to metatarsal foot pain:

An acute pain in the toe area

Lack of sensation or tingling of the toes

The pain gets worse when flexing the feet.

The pain worsens when walking barefoot, particularly on hard surfaces.

The ache worsens when you run, walk, or stand for long periods, and improves after resting.

A feeling like you’re walking on rocks

Metatarsalgia: Typical Causes

The metatarsal bones take the brunt of our weight when pushing-off while running or jumping, which can be the equivalent to several times your body weight. Among the frequent causes of metatarsal foot pain are extreme sports training, irregular foot anatomy, being overweight, improper footwear, and frequent wearing of high-heel shoes.

Possible Complications

If the symptoms of metatarsal foot pain are not treated in a timely manner, this condition can deteriorate to more severe ailments such as loss of range of motion, injury to foot ligaments, problems with the toes, and chronic stiffness. In extreme cases, necrosis can develop and collapse the entire bone structure.

Metatarsal Foot Pain Treatment Approach

Healing metatarsal foot pain in most cases does not require extreme measures. The most recommended treatments for metatarsal foot pain are:

Relax - Avoid stressing your feet by getting some rest. In short time you may participate in low-impact activities such as swimming, rowing, or cycling.

Use Ice - Use ice packs on the area of pain for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, several times a day.

Wear properly-fitting shoes - Shoes need to fit properly and be of the suitable for the type of activity that you plan to get involved in.

Wear arch support inserts – The use of suitable arch support inserts can provide the needed sustainment to reduce pressure on the metatarsal area.

Wearing arch support inserts can be an essential part of most treatments for metatarsal foot pain. Wearing metatarsal pads can also help to reduce the pressure around the metatarsal area.

In most cases involving metatarsal foot pain do not require medical treatment. It is normal for our feet to experience pain after a long day of standing or intense physical activity. Consult a physician if the pain or burning sensation if the metatarsal foot pain does not improve after altering your activities and wearing arch support inserts.

Having pain in the metatarsals can be an unpleasant experience, but by taking the proper care of your feet with the treatment options recommended above you can return to your normal activities in a short amount of time.

ood obesity skyrockets, video game consoles seek for ways to make their games “active” and obesity related diseases such as diabetes is at epidemic levels, athletics is a blessing to many children. Since children are less likely today (compared to 20 years ago) to run outside, ride bikes or play sports in the streets, more children are becoming active in sports from soccer and football to gymnastics and dance. This increased activity has improved the health of many children, but sometimes is accompanied by heel or ankle pain.

When a child between the age of 9-14 in girls or 9-16 in boys presents to my office complaining of either heel pain or ankle pain, the cause is usually the same. The entity is commonly known as Severs Disease or Calcaneal Apophysitis. Since this is a disease of growing bone, it only presents in children during the active stages of bony growth. Let me explain some.

In a growing bone, there is a region called the physis that consists of cartilaginous tissue instead of calcified bone. As the bone grows, this allows expansion and calcification at the edges to help produce this growth. As the bone reaches full growth potential, the physis is calcified and replaced by healthy bone. This physis, however can be affected by pressure or tension and can become painful.

In calcaneal apophysitis, the growth plate of the heel bone (or calcaneus) receives tension during sports from the Achilles tendon (the strongest tendon in the body). This pressure causes increased stress, swelling and associated pain to the posterior heel area close to where the Achilles tendon attaches. The pain is caused by stretching of the physis or apophysis of the heel from a tight Achilles tendon during running. This pain can be problematic and significantly interfere with activities, and over the years has even stopped many from playing the sports they love. Although it resolves without treatment when the bone stops growing, often severe pain will limit activities for years. This is no longer the case. There are treatment options that can alleviate the pain and maintain the active lifestyle required to help our children remain healthy.

Calcaneal apophysitis or Severs Disease was once a disease of boys playing soccer. With the increased competition levels in all sports including dance and gymnastics, we are encountering this problem in boys and girls when they are active. Think calcaneal apophysitis whenever your child is in the age range of 9 – 16 and complains of heel pain, especially when running or being active in sports. Get treatment from a foot and ankle specialist and help alleviate the pain associated with the exercise our children enjoy. Don’t make them stop their sport because of foot pain, help them resolve the pain while they await calcification of the growth plate and complete resolution of their symptoms.

James Carden asked:

The Foot Detox Spa has rapidly become one of the leading alternatives on how people are getting healthier. Foot detoxification goes way back to 1600 years ago in a Japanese legend. A group of people who had a variety of ailments made a pilgrimage into the mountains, according to this legend. As they were searching for a place to relax for the night they came across a hot spring coming out of the rocks of the mountain. They decided to sit beside the spring with their feet down to help with the fatigue they were experiencing. Upon waking up the next morning not only did the fatigue disappear but they felt better than they have in years. Upon completion of the pilgrimage they received shocking news from their physicians. Each of them was found to be completely devoid of the illnesses they had been afflicted with prior to their trip into the mountain.

From this idea of foot detoxification as a remedy for many different diseases was born. As the human understanding of the way the body works has gotten better, we have come to understand far better how foot baths can in fact be used as a cure to many common illnesses. While these original options worked as well as anything at the time could have been expected to, with advancements in research and technology the options have gotten far more stable and effective.

The biggest step forward in terms of getting real value out of a detox foot bath came in the realization that the human body is made up of many electrically charged cells. With this also came the realization that if those cells are electrically charges that it stands to reason that those charges can in fact be pushed out of balance. When the body’s cells are out of balance they are less able to facilitate the functions necessary to keep a person healthy. In essence these slight imbalances are the reason a body becomes less able to fend of illnesses. The real frustrating part about this is the fact that there is a built in cycle that gradually gets worse. As more illnesses enter the body they can actually wind up throwing the body further out of balance, thereby allowing an even greater chance of new illnesses being introduced.

This is exactly what the Detox Foot Bath is made to counteract. When introducing a healthy electrical current into the body through the feet the Detox Foot Bath is able to slowly bring the body back into a natural balance. As the body comes back into balance there will be a natural purge of toxins and heavy metals from the entire body. For anyone who uses the bath eventually the cleansing creates a healthier obvious difference in the body.

Dave Wilson asked:

If bunions aren’t getting you down, maybe the arch of your foot is causing you pain. Arch pain or arch strain occurs when the tissues in the middle of the foot become inflamed and results in a burning sensation.

The arch of the foot is shaped by a firm band of tissue that joins the toes to the heel bone. This band of tissue plays a vital role in the proper mechanics of the foot and assists in the transfer of weight from the heel to the toes. Thus, when this tissue becomes inflamed, even the slightest movement can cause pain.

There are many different factors that can lead to arch pain. Often arch pain can result from a direct cause such as a foot injury or a structural imbalance of the foot, such as flat feet or a low or high arch. However, the most frequent cause of arch pain is a common condition known as plantar fasciitis.

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that results from excessive stretching of the plantar fascia. This is a wide band of fibrous tissue that runs along the bottom surface of the foot. The inflammation of the plantar fascia usually causes pain to occur in the heel and arch areas. If Plantar fasciitis isn’t effectively treated promptly, further strain can be placed on the arch and a heel spur (a bony growth) may develop on the bottom of the heel.

The most common symptoms of arch pain are tenderness and pain in the arch region of the foot. Pain is usually severe when pressure is applied to the foot after a prolonged period of rest, such as after waking up from sleep.

The most common treatments used to help alleviate arch pain include:

• Supportive shoes – Avoid wearing high-heels as these shoes place a particular amount of stress on the arch region. Instead, wear footwear that properly fits your foot and provides it with proper support including shock absorbing soles, and a moderate, supportive heel. Furthermore, you should wear shoes to support your feet as much as you can. Also, limit the amount of time you walk barefoot, and don’t walk barefoot on hard surfaces.

• Insoles – Special insoles you can insert in your shoes known as orthotics help to alleviate pain by providing your foot with the support it needs to move normally.

• Stretches – Stretching your calf muscle and Achilles tendon causes you to flex your foot, which in turn allows you to stretch the arch. Stretching encourages circulation.

• Massage – Ice massages before bed can help ease sore feet and reduce inflammation. Another effective massage is to rub the bottom of your foot by moving it back and forth over a rolling pin. This helps ease pain caused by plantar fascia.

• Night splint – A night splint can help stretch the plantar fascia while you sleep and prevent stiffness.

• Anti-inflamatory medication – To help ease the pain you can take nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory medication such as ibuprofen. Acetaminophen is also often recommended.

If the above treatments fail to help your arch pain, or pain increases, it’s time for you to visit your doctor – or even better – a podiatrist. Remember, if you want to help heal your feet, you need to be good to them.

Dr Andrew Schneider asked:

When it comes to running outdoors, you never know what Mother Nature is going to surprise you with. Ask any marathon runner and they will tell you that as much as they’d like it to be so, not every day will be 65 degrees and sunny.

When I ran the 2009 Chicago Shamrock Shuffle, the weather the week leading up to the race had been great running weather, in the mid-fifties and sunny. When it came to the morning of the race, I woke up to find a blizzard outside my window! It had snowed a couple of inches overnight and the temperature had dropped to freezing. Being the die-hard runner that I am, I decided I was going to run the 8k race blizzard or not. By the time the race began my shoes, socks, and feet were soaking wet from standing in slushy snow puddles and I felt as if I had lost circulation in a couple of my toes.

I began the race assuming that my body temperature would rise and I would get better circulation to my feet. At the 3 mile mark I felt a throbbing pain in the toes in my right foot and I had to actually stop and take off my shoe because I thought I had broken my toe or gotten frostbite. I was terrified that my foot was going to look like Adam Sandler’s foot in the movie Mr. Deeds, but fortunately my toes were just swollen from the running conditions. I did manage to finish the race but I realized after finishing that I should have take the proper precautions to make sure my feet stayed dry and warm before and after the race.

There is nothing wrong with running in cold conditions but if you do you must make sure you take the proper precautions to take care of your feet. Here are 5 tips for running in cold and wet conditions:

1) Wear quality waterproof socks

Everyone knows that shoes can make a huge impact on the health of your feet, but socks are just as important. Make sure that you have a good hardy sock, not any of those thin shear cotton socks because they don’t help get rid of the moisture on your feet fast enough in wet conditions.

2) Bring an extra pair of socks

If you are going to run a race in cold or wet conditions then consider bringing an extra pair of socks that you can put on immediately before the race begins. This will ensure that your socks are fresh and dry.

3) Try Using Waterproof shoes

Many shoe companies now make shoes that are either partially waterproof or completely waterproof. They help to keep your feet dry which will help prevent blisters from forming.

4) Try to stay indoors as long as possible before the run

The longer you stay outside in cold weather the greater chance you have of get frostbite on your toes or other areas of your body. Try to limit the time spent outside to as little as possible. If racing in cold conditions try and find a warming tent to stand in for as long as possible before your race.

5) Avoid running in slush, puddles, or deep snow

Always try to take the cleanest path possible on your runs even if this means going a little out of your way. Trust me it will pay off at the end of the run because when your feet, shoes or socks get wet you have a great chance of getting frostbite or blisters.

Frostbite is serious business. However if you ensure that you do all you can to prepare for the cold weather, you should still have an enjoyable and successful run.
